Across 17 series, the Dancing on Ice winners have included soap actors, a Hear’Say singer, a rugby international, a couple of gymnasts and a ballroom dancer who took to the rink rather than the dancefloor. 16 celebrities in total have been crowned champions of Dancing on Ice since January 2006 – and Ray Quinn is the only contestant to win twice. The latest to lift the title was Coronation Street star Sam Aston back in 2025, although this series now looks like it was the last. Here’s everything we know about the winner of each series, and what ITV has and has not confirmed.

The skater behind three wins
But the star of the day normally makes the headlines. Another professional skater who should be highlighted, though, is Daniel Whiston, who skated with Gaynor Faye in 2006, Hayley Tamaddon in 2010 and Beth Tweddle in 2013, three wins in total. None of the other professional skaters on the list can claim to have achieved this.
A reminder that it takes a team. Celebrities come with wildly varying abilities, and much of what we see on TV is put together by the specialist who spends weeks getting a novice to stay on their feet, before then being taught to lift, spin and perform.
Who tends to win?
Soap actors are the obvious pattern. Gaynor Faye, Hayley Tamaddon, Sam Attwater, Matthew Wolfenden, Ryan Thomas and Sam Aston all came from Britain’s long-running continuing dramas. Those shows come with large, loyal audiences, which helps when the public decides the result.
Good showings from sports stars as well. Kyran Bracken, Beth Tweddle and Nile Wilson all won the title, though the gymnasts perhaps had the edge in that they were already more used to maintaining balance and body control.
Pop and talent-show names constitute the third category: Suzanne Shaw, Ray Quinn and Jake Quickenden. Ray Quinn has had the most success, winning in 2009 and again in the 2014 returners’ series.
Then there are the results that defy categorisation. While Joe Swash beating Perri Kiely in 2020 has been called possibly the most unexpected result the show has seen – that’s the opinion of one columnist, but it goes to show how unpredictable a public vote can be. Meanwhile, last year was a different beast of an unusual result: five celebrities had to withdraw, and Sonny Jay took the prize over Colin Jackson and Faye Brookes.
Regan Gascoigne, Nile Wilson and a run of close finals
In the early 2020s, the finals had been tight. Regan Gascoigne’s win over Brendan Cole and Kimberley Wyatt in 2022 was reported to be the ‘closest’ final in the show’s history. A year later, Nile Wilson and professional partner Olivia Smart beat Joey Essex and The Vivienne in a three-way final that was described as ‘one of the most tense finales’.
Ryan Thomas in March 2024 with partner Amani Fancy. He was crowned the winner, receiving the highest public votes in a final also consisting of Miles Nazaire and Vanessa Bauer, Adele Roberts and Mark Hanretty.
The 2025 final: Sam Aston and a farewell
The latest Dancing on Ice winners crowned Sam Aston and Molly Lanaghan. All three finalists received full marks from the judges for showcase routines choreographed by Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean. Aston and Lanaghan beat Michaela Strachan and Mark Hanretty, and Anton Ferdinand and Annette Dytrt, after a public vote.
There was also a touch of feeling to the night. Torvill and Dean danced as a partnership for what the programme was calling their final TV routine. As they’ve been part of the show since day one, that moment meant something to anyone who’d been watching it for the past twenty years. 2025 judging panel: Torvill and Dean, Ashley Banjo and Oti Mabuse.
Has Dancing on Ice been cancelled?
This is the bit where it makes a difference. Plenty of headlines have reported that it has been “axed”, but ITV’s official statement speaks with a bit more compassion. The station has said the show will be “rested” in 2026, with “no current plans for another series”.
That is not an announcement of permanent cancellation. It is also not a promise of a return. Reports on the decision pointed to falling audiences. The first episode of the 2025 series drew an average of 2.9 million viewers, down from 3.6 million for the 2024 launch. The 2025 final reportedly pulled in 2.7 million, against a peak of around 12 million in the show’s early years.
The show has been shelved before, after 2014, and came back four years later, so a revival isn’t impossible. But Christopher Dean was cautious when asked. He said there might be another series, but that nobody knew yet, while his and Torvill’s tour was named Our Last Dance because it was really the end. As of this writing, no new series has been confirmed.
Conclusion
The list of Dancing on Ice winners reads like a quick history of British television since 2006, from Gaynor Faye’s win in the very first series to Sam Aston’s in the latest. It includes one two-time champion in Ray Quinn, one skater with three titles in Daniel Whiston, and a few finals that people still argue about. Whether anyone adds a name to that list depends on a decision ITV hasn’t made.
One more thing before you search again
If you’re looking up the Dancing on Ice winners for pub quiz purposes or to settle an argument with a friend, two things lead to most of the confusion. The 2014 series was a celebrity returners’ tournament, and that’s why Ray Quinn is the only star who has won the show twice and why we’ve had 17 series, 16 winners. And, for the last six years, it’s been a vote, not the judges’ scores, that clinched the crown. That’s why a star can clear the boards but not take home the glittering prize.
