When the BBC announced in December 2024 that Angela Rippon would be replaced by former BBC Breakfast presenter Louise Minchin, it brought to an end one of TV’s most enduring daytime collaborations. Rippon was one of the original presenters on the show. But it also raised a pertinent question for regular viewers: who are the Rip Off Britain presenters, and what exactly do they bring to a show about boilers that aren’t working, scam holiday companies and missing parcels?
And the quick reply is: Gloria Hunniford. Julia Somerville. And Louise Minchin. The fact that they all come from a mix of radio and newsrooms (they have all been in the trenches of long-distance competitive sport) has much to do with the show’s tone.
Who Presents Rip Off Britain Now?
Gloria Hunniford (from 2009), Julia Somerville (from 2011) and Louise Minchin (from 2024). Former presenters are Angela Rippon (2009-2024) and Jennie Bond (2009-2010). The programme was first broadcast on BBC One on 30 November 2009.
Minchin’s first series as a presenter aired from Monday 6 January 2025, weekdays at 10:45 am on BBC One. The format was described simply by the BBC as follows: “The presenters scour the country’s newspapers and websites, taking on cases from viewers who believe they’ve been ripped off, and then the team gets to the bottom of them”. It has since spun off to three other series, Food, Holidays and Live.

How the Line-Up Changed Over the Years
The original threesome was made up of Rippon, Hunniford and Jennie Bond. Julia Somerville took over from Bond from series three, and that Rippon, Hunniford and Somerville partnership was the tone of the programme for more than a decade. Many viewers are just aware of it as “the three ladies at the big table”.
The second alteration arrived in 2024, and it was far greater. Rippon was among the original faces of the programme, and her name was associated with it nearly as much as the actual title.
Gloria Hunniford: The Radio Pioneer
Hunniford was a singer before beginning a career in broadcast journalism in her native Northern Ireland. In 1982, she became the first woman to present her own daily show on BBC Radio 2 – it was initially broadcast for 13 years. The following year she was one of the first women TV broadcasters to host her own chat show.
Outside of work, she has also taken on charity work. In 2007, she was awarded the Freedom of the City of London – in recognition of her work as a radio and TV presenter, and as a supporter of cancer charities and breast cancer awareness, following the death of her daughter Caron Keating in 2004. On the show, she is usually the most sympathetic, the one who sounds like she’s sat on your kitchen table.
Julia Somerville: The Newsroom Veteran
Somerville’s career, however, is primarily based on the big bulletins. She was asked to join BBC Television News in 1983 to front the Nine O’Clock News and then signed on with ITN in 1987, where she remained for 14 years before leaving in 2001. At ITN, she fronted the News at Ten and the Lunchtime News, and helped to establish the ITN News Channel.
In consumer telly, she is a latecomer. She started at Rip Off Britain, when the programme returned to BBC One in autumn 2011 for its third run, taking over from Jennie Bond, a journalist by trade. That journalism past is obvious when she grills interviewees. She is the interviewer who keeps going for a straight answer.
Louise Minchin: The Newest Face
She is the least obvious fit on paper, and perhaps the most intriguing. Minchin, who read Spanish at St Andrews, worked in the Latin American department of the BBC World Service and was subsequently a presenter of the One O’Clock News and the BBC News Channel news anchor, before hosting BBC Breakfast for 20 years. She was announced as leaving her sofa in June 2021.
Off-air, she was a competitive triathlete. She was inspired to take up her first triathlon by a challenge on BBC Breakfast in 2013, and secured her place on the GB age-group team for the 2015 race in Chicago, her book Dare to Tri recounts. She was chair of the Women’s Prize for Fiction in 2023.
At the time, the BBC’s daytime commissioner said Minchin combines an investigative journalistic integrity to hold organisations to account with the warmth and empathy to find out what’s really going on. That’s an apt description of Minchin, and the hands-on experiments that are her hallmark will work well with the show. The announcement referred to one where she tried to smush parcels with eggs and a two-metre-high fence.
Why Angela Rippon Left
The BBC announcement confirmed the alteration but said nothing by way of an explanation, and no credible source provides one, so it would be speculation to do so here. What is definitely known is her lengthy period of co-presenting: 15 years before she left in 2024.
Her broader career is quite well known. She was the first female journalist to read the news on a regular basis on national television (though she is frequently misnamed the first female newsreader) and was awarded a CBE in 2017 for her services to dementia care. She has been outspoken in her defence of the 3.45 pm time slot, and viewers can choose how they consume the programme.
What Happens Next
The programme has a secure future. BBC Studios retained the production contract after a competitive tender, covering three series a year of 15 episodes each, 90 episodes over two years, from spring 2026. The BBC’s announcement named Hunniford and Somerville as the long-term presenters, with Minchin joining earlier in the same year.
Presenter line-ups can change between series, so it is worth checking the latest billing before a new run. The Rip Off Britain Presenters in Brief.
The Rip Off Britain Presenters in Brief
And the bit you really want to know: the Rip Off Britain presenters today are Gloria Hunniford, Julia Somerville and Louise Minchin, with Minchin’s first series starting in January 2025. Angela Rippon, Hunniford and Jennie Bond originally presented the programme when it launched in 2009, with Somerville taking over from Bond when she left after series three.
Rippon announced her decision to stand down after 15 years in 2024, but has so far not been given a reason by the BBC. The programme is still being made, with a contract in place for three 15-episode series a year from spring 2026.
