Jasmine Harman has spent the last 20 years walking through other people’s houses and asking the most dreaded words in the world of property: “Is this the one?” In 2024, Jasmine Harman asked them about herself. She, her husband and their two children left the UK and bought a derelict villa on the Costa del Sol in Spain. Channel 4 followed them, and a documentary about her own journey was born. It’s not entirely what you might expect from a woman who has made her reputation on finding strangers’ homes overseas, but it’s why Jasmine Harman fans keep increasing.

Before the cameras
Jasmine Harman did not start in television. She trained as a fitness instructor and worked in the health club industry, which eventually took her to Portugal’s Algarve. There she worked as a marketing manager for a luxury health resort. She also hosted her own live magazine radio show on Kiss FM.
The radio job mattered more than it sounds. By her own account, presenting regular shows gave her the chance to develop her broadcasting skills. She had no television contacts or experience when she decided to try presenting, and she threw herself in anyway.
Joining A Place in the Sun
She was selected from hundreds of contestants in 2004 to feature on the first ever series of A Place in the Sun: Home or Away. Her first job was in Portugal’s Alentejo, which drew on her ability to speak the language. The series was first screened by Channel 4 in 2000, and she was four years in when she got her break.
According to her agent’s online biography, she is the show’s most senior original presenter and has filmed more than 250 episodes. Her years on the show have been primarily spent working overseas – from Portugal and Spain to Cyprus to the USA. The show is also screened in other countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa.
Pretty much the format is unchanged in all this time. British couple or family has a budget and a wish list, and Harman takes them round homes – often, at least one on the list – that don’t meet the brief. Part of her appeal is that she under-promises and over-delivers; she’s friendly but not prying and, again, we like her.
Beyond house hunting
Property is only part of her CV. She has fronted The Zoo Next Door on BBC One, which looked at people who take pet ownership to extremes. She has also presented Collectaholics on BBC Two, about some of Britain’s most devoted collectors. Other credits include The Truth About Your Teeth and appearances as a contributor on The One Show. She has also been a travel columnist for Look magazine and a regular contributor to A Place in the Sun magazine. She appears at the show’s live events, advising on buying abroad.
Her most personal piece of work is My Hoarder Mum and Me, a BBC One documentary from 2011. It followed her family’s attempts to help her mother, who had compulsive hoarding disorder. The film drew enough attention to lead to a series, Britain’s Biggest Hoarders. As a result, Jasmine Harman went on to set up a support website, Hoarding. Support for people affected by hoarding and their families. She is also a patron of HoardingUK.
It is a long way from sunny terraces and pool views. It may also be why people respond to her. She has shown herself to be more than a presenter with a clipboard.
Vegan living and the PETA award
Jasmine Harman is a vegan and has been a Veganuary ambassador. That love of animals translated into her home decor. Her property, which has been featured on the cover of Metro Home magazine and a host of others, in 2021 received the title of Influencer of the Year at PETA’s Vegan Homeware Awards.
She has also been more vociferous about her IVF experience. She revealed she is very sensitive to this expensive and inaccessible IVF for other women.
Below is a taste of her charity work. She has helped Dogs Trust, Breast Cancer Care, and Nelson Mandela’s Children’s Fund. On her own website, it mentions taking 192 very sick children to Orlando with Dreamflight and dog sledding in the Arctic for Dogs Trust.
The move to Spain
Jasmine Harman and her husband Jon relocated to Spain in late 2024 and moved close to Estepona on the Costa del Sol. In the video announcing the new show, she said the family was craving to spend more time together and have more of a life balance. She said Estepona had a beautiful community.
Their house required a full renovation. She told me she never wanted to get involved in a renovation, but they fell in love with the house regardless. She has likened that to what she has experienced with her own house hunters: sometimes you just feel something is the one.
Channel 4 created Jasmine’s Renovation in the Sun, a 15-part programme made over a year. It documents the family acquiring the DIY skills they need, navigating local red tape, forming friendships and managing work and children aged four and six. It’s a fairly novel take on the reality show. Jasmine Harman has spent her career warning viewers about potential pitfalls of moving abroad, and now she has to follow her own advice.
As stated in her agent’s biography, the series was extended mid-broadcast, with the ratings said to have outperformed Gogglebox and The Great British Bake Off. That’s the version from her people, and I haven’t been able to verify it. A second series has now been commissioned, which will still track her refurb but will also follow three other series of British expats’ refurbishments in Spain, with Harman stopping in on all three.
Why people keep searching for her
Some of it is longevity. A presenter who has been on British television screens since 2004 is a known quantity in a way that most people on the box aren’t. Some of it is that she has spoken frankly about tough topics, like her mother’s hoarding and her IVF journey, more openly than most presenters. And some of it is that after a move to Spain, she became a real-life story complete with a house, a budget, and many more problems.
What isn’t confirmed is just as important. Reputable outlets don’t report her net worth, and if you’ve seen numbers online, they’re probably just estimates. The same thing applies to much of the gossip about her life – beyond what she and her team have confirmed publicly, there’s not much concrete to go on, and that’s probably how she prefers it.
What’s next
With another run of the property renovation show set to be released and A Place in the Sun continuing, Jasmine Harman appears to have a busy schedule ahead of him. The villa near Estepona is yet to be completed, and the journey to finding a new home will be documented on screen. For those wondering about the true cost of emigrating, it is definitely worth keeping an eye on.
The Presenter Who Became Her Own Case Study
Few TV presenters get to test their own advice in public, but Jasmine Harman has. After years of guiding house hunters through Spain, Portugal and beyond, she now has a rundown villa near Estepona, a family to look after and a Channel 4 crew watching every setback. Her story works because it isn’t polished. Jasmine Harman started on Algarve radio, moved into presenting, shared her mother’s hoarding on screen, and then took on her own renovation. With a second series commissioned and A Place in the Sun still running, her next chapter is already filming.
