When the show went back on air to BBC One in September, for the first time Strictly Come Dancing has three hosts, and none of them are Tess Daly or Claudia Winkleman. It’s the loudest change in a year of loud changes. Gary Lineker is no longer the face of Match of the Day, Mishal Husain now works at Bloomberg, and the main evening bulletins are reliant on a coterie of fill-in presenters. If you’ve been wondering who is doing what, here’s a guide to BBC presenters in 2026 between fact and conjecture.

Daly and Winkleman step down from Strictly.
Daly and Winkleman revealed on 1 October 2025 that they would be leaving. Daly had hosted the series alongside the late Sir Bruce Forsyth since it began in 2004, and there was speculation for several months about his replacement. On 12 May, Zoe Ball announced she had been unsuccessful, and Rylan Clark also announced he was not offered the role – these are the only offers on record and anything else is just gossip.
Willis, Widdicombe and Radebe take over.
The BBC’s announcement in May was also a surprise for two reasons: three names were named instead of two, and one was a working professional dancer. Willis, known as the host of Big Brother from 2013 until the show was axed by Channel 5, is best known for hosting Big Brother from 2013 to 2018. Widdicombe is known to viewers from Taskmaster, Mock the Week and The Last Leg, and Radebe has been a Strictly professional dancer since 2018.
Reports said that Willis would replace Daly in the ballroom, with Widdicombe occupying the upstairs “Clauditorium”.
Lineker’s exit from Match of the Day
Lineker’s departure was not just the most high-profile BBC departure but the most cringeworthy. In 2024, he had announced he would leave Match of the Day after the end of the season – although he would continue to present coverage of the FA Cup and World Cup. Then came a social media row in 2025. Lineker issued an apology for “the hurt and upset caused” and decided it was better to “step back from the BBC presenting role entirely” with his last programme on 25 May. Then-BBC director-general Tim Davie said Lineker had “admitted he made a mistake”.
The new Match of the Day line-up
The rotation was there already. Kelly Cates, Mark Chapman and Gabby Logan were introduced as the new presenters back in January 2025, rotating the role across all the highlights programmes including Match of the Day 2 and the Champions League show. Cates also continues as part of the team for Sky Sports. Alan Shearer and Micah Richards continue as the regular pundits. The programme first began in 1964, so a change of face always comes with some opinions, and three presenters will be strange for a while.

The World Cup test
The first major tournament of the new era was the 2026 World Cup. As the BBC coverage reported during the tournament itself, the broadcaster elected to broadcast from its Salford base rather than venture to North America – a decision explained by cost and also to reduce its environmental footprint. Kelly Cates, Mark Chapman, Gabby Logan and Alex Scott hosted, while Shearer, Rooney, Richards, Hart, Houghton and White appeared as pundits.
The people behind the news bulletins
When it comes to evening bulletins, the BBC’s newsreaders come into their own. With Huw Edwards absent, there is no rig for News at Ten, and no clear rotation of presenters. In effect, the main presenters are Fiona Bruce, Sophie Raworth, Reeta Chakrabarti and Clive Myrie, with Jane Hill also employed.
Mishal Husain. She started at the BBC in 1998, spent 11 years as part of the Today team, then left to join Bloomberg on a new interview programme. Her departure is indicative of how much the BBC’s top talent is being lured away.
Why BBC presenters keep making headlines
A BBC presenter is not just someone reading autocue. When you’re bound by impartiality rules, you’re funded by the public, and your programme is paid for by a licence fee that everyone has an opinion about, it’s a big deal. That’s why a tweet, or a guest on a stand-up comedy show, or a Saturday-night presenter change are national stories.
It also sheds light on why a leave-taking is so perry. A fresh presenter risks disrupting time patterns. Viewers who watched Winkleman and Daly as a couple for 2 decades can’t help but evaluate the ones they expect on identical measures.
Confirmed, reported and unverified
A quick editor’s note, since this topic attracts a lot of loose claims:
- Confirmed: the Strictly trio, the Match of the Day trio, Lineker’s departure and Husain’s move to Bloomberg.
- Reported: the Salford-based World Cup set-up and details from the Strictly launch recording.
- Not established: claims about private reasons behind any exit, or about who “really” turned down which job. Treat those with caution unless a named source backs them.
What to watch next
The biggest challenge over the autumn is whether the three-presenter Strictly can find its groove. As with Match of the Day, the BBC will be keeping an eye on audience reaction to a line-up that varies from week to week. A permanent anchor for News at Ten could still happen, but there’s no word on it yet.
The BBC presenters that viewers are most familiar with are more in a state of change than at any time in the last 10 years. Newbies are afforded greater indulgence than in years past, but also considered quickly.
Quick answers to the most common questions
The BBC presenters story continues to gather speed, and many of the searches you guys use to come here end up boiling down to the same three questions: who replaced who, who left, and why. Here are the quick answers to the most common questions as they stand, based only on what’s been confirmed.
